It’s got potential; how could it not? More job seekers begin their job search on Google than with any other resource. Worldwide, Google handles over 100 million jobs-related searches each month. In the United States, Google handles over 45 million jobs-related searches each month, and one would expect that will continue to increase with the evolution of Google+’s continued development and deployment. It does seem to efficiently bundle a lot of tools….you’ve got the profile page which is like an about.me page, but with more bells and whistles, networking platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and direct communication capabilities like Skype. Cool. So I got invited (whoohoo), and hooked up with GooglePlus One or +1 or however it may become “acronymized.” Anyway, I set about the business of trying to learn and pass along what I feel might be some helpful features for my folks whether, HR pros, recruiters or job seekers. Given that there are some 14 million of you out there unemployed, I’m hopeful one or two of you might read this. I’m certain I have only skimmed the surface here, so if you have ideas, thoughts, input, etc., please comment, or email me.
- Start by crafting up a decent, respectable, professional profile. This will be your “employer facing persona, brand, resume.” It is important to know right off the bat that Google has allowed everyone to search profiles for free which means you can be found by anyone, and anyone can find you. That is good and bad. Not sure how long that will last though. I’m sure LinkedIn would like for it to cease and desist sooner rather than later.
- Next up, enter those companies you’d like to target in the “Find People” box and review those people and companies that are of interest.
- Next, “circle” those individuals that already work for companies you are targeting. Start the obligatory kissing up process of sharing, commenting, and of course”+1ing” their posts. Really nothing new relative to the process of developing a relationship as you have probably already done on Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn.
- Like Groups on Linked in or Tweet Chats you can set up” Clubs” for the purpose of job search by using” Hangouts.”
- Play to the experts and ask job search questions so the pros can illuminate you with their brilliance. You need to post those questions as “Public” by indicating “public” in the share box. You can further enhance said pros self-esteem by post to a specific expert or individual by placing their name in the share box. Questions seem to have a life of their own. Not unlike comments on LinkedIn or Tweets, they can evolve into conversations that continue for a while, and include multiple participants
- I’m not at all clear how Hangouts will evolve regarding more direct employer, candidate interactions. It would be wise to get familiar with Hangout though as it might become a viable mechanism for interviewing, and certainly screening. Practice using it with your friends, and family. It’s like getting used to Skype…a little weird seeing yourself the way the world does. Get feedback on how you look, sound, facial expressions, etc.
